In Japanese word "origami" means to fold paper. All forms of paper folding were not grouped under origami, it was first known as "tsutsumi", a kind of paper used for formal occasions, like at weddings, ceremonies, or graduations . Before that, paper-folding was for fun, and was known by a variety of names, like "orikata", "orisue", "orimono", "tatamigami" and others.
Japanese origami began sometime after Buddhist monks carried paper to Japan during the 6th century.The first Japanese origami is dated from this period and was used for religious ceremonial purposes only, due to the high price of paper.
